New to American shores for 2011, the Mazda2
represents Mazda?s entry into the sub-compact market to tangle with competition
like the Ford Fiesta, Chevy Aveo, Toyota Yaris, and Honda Fit. Launched
internationally in 2007, the all-new Mazda2 is a refresh of the car that won the
World Car of the Year award in 2008.
The 2011 Mazda2 comes as a four-door hatchback with seating for up to five passengers and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats which expand cargo space to 27.8 cubic feet when stowed. Available in two distinct trims, Sport and Touring, all Mazda2?s come equipped with a 100-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 98 pounds-feet of torque. The peppy four-cylinder comes mated to your choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The Mazda2 achieves fuel economy of 27-29 mpg in the city and 33-35 mpg on the highway, meaning you?ll spend less time and money at the pump, and more time enjoying the Mazda driving experience.
The Mazda2 continues the latest styling trend at Mazda with the pronounced black front air dam that is seen on the Mazda3 and MX-5, and is sure to produce a ?smile.? Flared fender arches, a rear lip spoiler (standard on the Touring trim, optional on Sport), and upward sweeping window lines give the Mazda2 an aggressive stance that hints at its sporty driving nature. 15-inch steel wheels come standard, while an upgrade to 8-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels is optional, as are halogen fog lights.
For its segment, the Mazda2 possesses many standard interior features that the competition lacks, and even outdoes its larger sibling, the Mazda3 in that regard. Air Conditioning, power windows and doors, keyless entry, MP3/CD player, and an auxiliary input jack all come standard with the Sport trim. An upgrade to the Touring trim brings with it wheel mounted audio controls, a trip computer, cruise control, and a leather wrapped steering wheel.
Safety is a top priority with the Mazda2. It comes with advanced front and side impact/curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, and special door beams to minimize damage from side-impact collisions. Stability and traction control are also standing by to step in during emergency maneuvers and help keep the Mazda2 on the road and out of harm?s way.
Most sub-compacts are long on fuel efficiency and low cost, but skimp on the fun ? not so with the 2011 Mazda2. The Mazda2 successfully merges fun and practicality, in a sporty and stylish package that will turn heads wherever it goes.
